Those familiar with us at Woven Natural Fertility Care know that we wholeheartedly believe in and advocate for real answers for reproductive health issues. Whether you’re single and dealing with irregular cycles or painful periods, or married and struggling to conceive a pregnancy, you deserve to be treated with dignity and respect — and that means getting to the root cause of your concerns.
For those struggling with infertility, though, it can be especially difficult to get this kind of care — for several reasons:
Most OBGYNs are not trained in how to diagnose and treat infertility. They spend the majority of their specialized education on pregnancy, labor, & delivery. There are so many things that could go wrong in these areas, and lives are on the line. We can be grateful for their skills and expertise! BUT — this can leave those needing specific gynecological support a bit stranded.
Infertility is treated as a diagnosis (“This is what’s wrong with you.”) instead of a symptom (“You aren’t able to get pregnant, so let’s investigate why that is.”) When we think of infertility as a diagnosis, instead of a symptom, it halts progress. Infertility as a diagnosis feels insurmountable. Why is it happening? Why me? What hope do we have? But when it’s accurately viewed as a symptom that points to an underlying condition, it keeps our focus on the productive work of investigating why and getting answers.
It feels more time-consuming to investigate why pregnancy isn’t happening than to try to work around it through avenues like IUI or IVF. Of course, many would challenge that idea — like my client who was told she had unexplained infertility and then advised to try IUIs….. eleven times… before being told IVF was her only hope (spoiler alert: it wasn’t). Yes, it takes time to investigate a problem, but almost any industry will tell you it’s better to address the issue at its source than try a bandaid approach.
This is why I so strongly recommend working with a physician with Restorative Reproductive Medicine training, like NaProTechnology. Not only did they become OBGYNs, but they dedicated an additional 18 months to further education and skill.
But what will they do that your local OBGYN won’t?
